MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office charged a 43-year-old man Monday for assaulting a police officer in connection with Sunday’s officer-involved shooting.

Robert John Yellow Wolf faces one felony count of second-degree assault for allegedly waving a knife threateningly at Fifth Precinct officer Larry Petersen.

Petersen shot Yellow Wolf near the interception of Lyndale Avenue South and Interstate-94 after Yellow Wolf approached him with a knife, made stabbing motions and made him walk backwards into southbound traffic.

Petersen was standing on the median when he fired his service weapon, police said.

During the incident, Petersen loudly told Yellow Wolf to drop his knife.

Police say witnesses provided a consistent narrative of the assault and the shooting.

Yellow Wolf was also charged on Monday for allegedly cutting the face of a man after he took to panhandling in an area Yellow Wolf considers his.

Police say that after cutting the panhandler, Yellow Wolf saw his ex-girlfriend, threatened to kill her and cut her hair with his knife. Charges are being considered for this incident.
