DULUTH, Minn. (WCCO) — Two people were arrested Thursday after witnesses saw someone with a gun on the University of Minnesota Duluth campus.

The school was put in lockdown when a UMD employee called 911 after seeing a man drop a weapon. The university says a 15-year-old boy and a 19-year-old man were arrested, and a pellet gun was recovered.

When confronted, police say the two became physically and verbally uncooperative. They even taunted an officer, telling him to shoot them.

Sgt. Tim LeGarde of UMD Police says the incident shows that the department is focused on protecting students.

“I think this is a good example of our reaction, the quality of our reaction in keeping them safe,” LeGarde said. “It turned out very well.”

Police say the UMD campus is safe and classes went on as normal Thursday.

So far, the young men are facing charges of disorderly conduct, underage consumption and possession of marijuana.

More serious charges could follow.
