MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — More than 1,000 people have been arrested for driving while intoxicated in Minnesota since the day before Thanksgiving, according to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.

The DPS kicked off a month-long enforcement campaign on Nov. 27, adding extra DWI patrols throughout the state.

An estimated 1,005 people have been arrested so far. The campaign will continue through the month of December, with state and local law enforcement agencies working overtime.

They say counties with the highest combined totals of drunk driving deaths and alcohol-related injuries will be a primary focus for additional enforcement.

Hennepin County is leading the list, with Anoka, Ramsey, St. Louis and Dakota rounding out the top five.

In 2012, more than 28,400 people were arrested for DWI, with 104 people killed in drunk driving crashes and 2,644 people suffering injuries in alcohol-related crashes.
