MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A Shakopee man was charged Thursday with one count of food stamp fraud, costing the Supplemental Nutrition and Assistance Program (SNAP) over $29,000.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, 47-year-old Chin Son Kim would get SNAP cards, aka Food Stamps, by approaching people near a charity facility in St. Paul and at other locations.
Kim would then take the cards to local markets and receive cash, store credit or groceries.
He would then return the card to its owner and give them cash in the amount of half the transaction total.
The loss to the SNAP program due to Kim’s fraud is estimated at $29,816. If convicted, he could serve five years in federal prison.
