MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A 54-year-old Woodbury man who is the head football coach at a Twin Cities Catholic high school was arrested this week for soliciting prostitution, authorities say.

Mark Mauer was one of 19 people arrested this week in connection with a prostitution ring at a Fridley hotel. He was booked into the Anoka County Jail and has since been released. Mauer is the head football coach at Hill-Murray High School in the east Twin Cities metro and is also the cousin of Twins star Joe Mauer.

Mauer has coached at Hill-Murray for one year after replacing Brooks Bollinger, who took a college football coaching job. The Pioneers got to the Class 4A state quarterfinals last fall.

Police say the men arrested in the prostitution ring on Tuesday ranged in age from 23 to 56. On Monday, police arrested four women ages 18 to 32 at the same Fridley hotel for prostitution.

According to a police report, authorities set up a sting operation at the hotel through an advertisement on Backpage.com, to which Mauer replied. Police say Mauer had agreed to pay $100 for “full service.” After being taken into custody, Mauer told police he was “just messing around” and that it was stupid to come to the hotel. He had done it a couple of times in the past but would leave the hotel without doing anything.

According to police records, Mauer has been barred from the hotel for at least one year. The incident is still under investigation.
