HUDSON, Wis. (WCCO) – A judge has ordered a Wisconsin man accused of killing his three young daughters to undergo two separate psychiatric examinations prior to the beginning of his trial.
Aaron Schaffhausen is charged in the murders of Cecilia, Sophie and Amara Schaffhausen. Police say he killed them inside their River Falls home last summer.
Last month, Schaffhausen’s attorney was ordered to give prosecutors copies of his mental health reports. The judge is requiring those documents after Schaffhausen entered an insanity plea.
Schaffhausen’s lawyer had argued that he shouldn’t have to turn over that information so far in advance of the trial, which is slated for April 1.
The judge ordered Schaffhausen’s attorney to let the state have two separate experts examine him. The court also clarified that the defense does not intend to have an attorney present during those evaluations, but one may be nearby in case Schaffhausen has a question.
There will be another motions hearing on March 1.
