MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – An Apple Valley man faces charges for fleeing police in south Minneapolis last week, weaving through traffic, “nearly causing several accidents” and then running from officers on foot – leaving his 3-year-old son in the car, authorities say.

Minneapolis police said Wednesday that 25-year-old Salvador Mejia-Camacho faces two charges: (1) fleeing police in a car, a felony; and (2) endearment of a child, a gross misdemeanor.

Mejia-Camacho’s charges stem from an incident on Nov. 9, when police tried to stop him for irregularities with registration stickers. But Mejia-Camacho didn’t stop. He led officers on a two-minute chase, snaking through traffic. He then got out of the car and ran off through lawns on the 2700 block of Pillsbury Avenue South.

When running, Mejia-Camacho threw a jar filled with marijuana, police said.

When officers arrested him, they learned he had a gross misdemeanor warrant out of Dakota County and that the tabs on the car he drove did not belong to it.

Mejia-Camacho’s son was in the car throughout the case, police said.

Mejia-Camacho is currently in custody for his Hennepin County charges and two holds: one for Dakota County and one for a federal agency.
