MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A Minneapolis man was indicted Thursday for attempted first-degree criminal sexual conduct after stabbing a woman on April 19 – a charge that carries a life sentence.

According to the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office, 48-year-old Robert John Meyers came up behind a woman in a downtown Minneapolis parking ramp and put a knife to her throat. Meyers, dressed in a suit and tie, told the woman they were going for a ride.

The woman screamed, bit Meyers finger and kicked him until he left her. When she eventually got into her car, the victim noticed that she had been stabbed. Her injuries were life-threatening, and she required surgery for a punctured liver.

Meyers faces a life sentence because he has a prior criminal sexual conduct conviction, and the April 19 attack inflicted great bodily harm.

Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman said he shows no mercy for repeat sexual offenders.

“Serious crime downtown is rare, but when it occurs we and the police move quickly,” said Freeman. “In this case, a thorough investigation discovered Meyers had done this before in another state. When sex offenders assault someone again, we throw the book at them.”
