MAYS LANDING, N.J. (AP) — A Minneapolis man and former musician with the band Owl City has pleaded guilty in New Jersey to lewdness with a child.

Thirty-two-year-old Daniel Jorgensen admitted he exposed himself to the girl, who was under 13, in Atlantic City in August 2013. He was initially charged with attempting to lure the child and engaging in criminal sexual contact with the girl on the Atlantic City beach.

A judge sentenced Jorgensen to serve two years’ probation in Minneapolis.

Jorgensen played guitar, vibraphone and bass with the electronica group.

EDEN VALLEY, Minn. (WCCO/AP) — Two organizations are offering a total of $11,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever released approximately 38,000 mink from a central Minnesota farm.

Fur Commission USA is offering $10,000 and Tri-County Crime Stoppers is offer $1,000 for information about how more than $750,000 worth of mink were released from Lang Farms near Eden Valley earlier this week.

Fur Commission USA Executive Director Michael Whelan says thousands of the mink have died from heat, stress and dehydration. Most of the animals that died were young and hadn’t yet been weaned from their mothers.

As of Friday, Lang Farms said that 15,000 mink were known to be dead, and 11,000 have been recovered still alive. That leaves still about 14,000 unaccounted for.

Whelan says the incident is being investigated by the Stearns County Sheriff’s office and the FBI.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — A 33-year-old day care provider in Eagan has been found guilty of assaulting a toddler, leaving the victim with severe and permanent brain damage, the Dakota County Attorney’s Office announced Friday.

On Thursday, Mariel Alexandra Grimm was convicted of first-degree assault in connection to the assault of a 13-month-old boy she was caring for on Sept. 22, 2016.

Grimm called 911 on the day of the incident and reported that the baby became unresponsive while she was changing his diaper. She was the only adult present and no children appeared to have unsupervised contact with the toddler.

A child abuse pediatrician, however, found no medical cause to account for the victim’s severe brain injury – determining that the injury was consistent with abusive head trauma.

“We are pleased to have brought Mariel Grimm to justice for this serious crime. Our thoughts are extended to the baby’s parents and family for his ongoing care,” Dakota County Attorney James Backstream said.

Sentencing is set for Sept. 29, 2017.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — A 39-year-old Minnesota Lake man faces charges after he allegedly put a topless picture of his ex on his motorcycle and violated an order for protection, according to the Faribault County Attorney’s Office.

Timothy Brandt faces two felony charges of nonconsensual dissemination of private sexual images and one misdemeanor count of violating order for protection in connection to the July 10, 2017 incident.

According to the criminal complaint, the victim reported an order for protection violation to the Wells Police Department on July 10.

The victim also reported that she was contacted by a family member about a picture Brandt posted to his Facebook account that shows his motorcycle in a parking lot in Wells.

On the motorcycle gas tank, a photo-decal was seen of a woman posing in underwear with her breasts exposed. The caption read: “Beautiful day to show off the old lady, lol.”

The victim told police that the picture was taken with her consent in the past during her relationship with Brandt, but never meant to be shared with the public.

The victim also said Brandt violated the order of protection when he showed up when she was watching a baseball game at Half Moon Park in Wells. Two juveniles with her also reported he was there in the park looking at them. He allegedly breached the 100 yards required by the order for protection.

If convicted, Brandt faces up to three years in prison and/or a fine of $5,000 per each felony charge.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The mother of slain motorist Philando Castile has filed a petition to receive nearly all of a $3 million settlement in his death.

Valerie Castile’s petition proposes she get $2 million, with the remaining $995,000 going to attorneys. A Hennepin County judge will review the petition Aug. 2.

The Star Tribune reports Castile sought to reach relatives who might want part of the settlement, but only Philando Castile’s father replied. The petition says Phelix H. Frazier Sr., serving life in a federal prison in Illinois, made no claim.

Castile was shot in July 2016 during a traffic stop seconds after he informed Officer Jeronimo Yanez he had a gun. Yanez was acquitted of manslaughter after testifying that Castile ignored commands not to reach for the gun.

Janeé Harteau Resigns As Minneapolis Police Chief

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Amid controversy stemming from her response to another in a string of headline-making police shootings, Janeé Harteau has resigned as Minneapolis Police Chief.

In her resignation letter, Harteau says the recent shooting of Justine Damond, “as well as some other recent incidents, have caused me to engage in deep reflection. … I’ve decided I am willing to step aside to let a fresh set of leadership eyes see what more can be done for the MPD to be the very best it can be.”

According to a statement from the city, the chief’s resignation comes at the request of Mayor Betsy Hodges, who has clashed publicly with Harteau in the past.

Mayor Hodges also released a statement on the chief’s resignation:

“As far as we have come, I’ve lost confidence in the Chief’s ability to lead us further — and from the many conversations I’ve had with people around our city, especially this week, it is clear that she has lost the confidence of the people of Minneapolis as well,” the statement said.

The mayor was reading a statement on the chief’s resignation at a press conference Friday evening when dozens of protesters stormed the room. Mayor Hodges eventually had to be escorted out of the room.

On Thursday, five days after the police shooting of Justine Damond in south Minneapolis, Harteau spoke publicly for the first time. She had been out of town since the shooting, on vacation.

“Justine didn’t have to die. Based on the BCA information, this should not have happened. We’re talking about the actions of one individual,” Harteau said.

In the meantime, the mayor is nominating Medaria Arradondo as the new chief of police. Arradondo is currently serving as the assistant chief of police.

“We had high hopes when Janee took over as chief and she seemed to have let our department down within the first six months of her tenure,” Lt. Bob Kroll, head of the Minneapolis Police officers’ union, said.

Harteau has been under growing pressure to speak out about her department’s officer-involved shooting. Some were questioning why she wouldn’t cut her vacation short and return with answers.

Harteau served as the head of the Minneapolis Police Department as it was in the center of intense scrutiny over the shooting deaths of Jamar Clark and Damond, additionally heightened in the Twin Cities following the shooting death of Philando Castile by then-St. Anthony Main police officer Jeronimo Yanez.

She was involved in open disagreements with police union head Bob Kroll, especially as protesters gathered around the city’s 4th precinct following the death of Clark. At one point she told Kroll not to wear his police uniform when giving interviews as the union president.

At the same time, she was nationally recognized for her leadership skills. Just months ago, Fortune Magazine named her among the top 50 world leaders.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A Minneapolis man has been charged for allegedly attacking a group of women with a knife in the elevator of a downtown parking ramp.

According to the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office, 45-year-old Benjamin Love was charged with first degree assault and three counts of aggravated robbery.

The criminal complaint states police found three women tending to a fourth lying on the floor of a car in Ramp B just before 1 a.m. Sunday. The woman on the floor had a cut on her chest.

The women were heading to their car when Love joined them in the elevator, according to the complaint.

When the women got out on the fourth floor, Love allegedly followed them, pulled out a knife and began grabbing the women and their purses. He sliced one woman’s hand and stabbed another in the chest before fleeing, according to the complaint.

Love is expected to make his first court appearance Monday.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A timeline of the July 15 fatal shooting of Justine Damond, an unarmed Australian woman, by a Minneapolis police officer compiled from police incident reports, 911 transcripts and reports from state investigators:

11:27 p.m. — Justine Damond calls 911 to report hearing sounds of distress from a girl or woman behind her house. She says it may be a rape. A dispatcher says officers should arrive soon.

11:35 p.m. — Damond calls 911 again to ask why police haven’t arrived yet. She gives the dispatcher address again.

11:41 p.m. — Officers Matthew Harrity and Mohamed Noor arrive and drive south down the alley behind Damond’s house. Harrity, who is driving, is startled by a loud noise near his squad car. Damond approaches the driver’s side window immediately afterward, and Noor fires his gun past Harrity, striking Damond through that window of the vehicle, according to Harrity in an interview with state investigators.

11:42 p.m. — Radio report of one person down, starting CPR.

11:50 p.m. — Radio report of police doing CPR for “last four minutes.”

11:51 p.m. — Damond is pronounced dead in the alley at the south end of her block. A medical examiner later says Damond was shot once in the abdomen.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Latest on the resignation of Minneapolis’ police chief amid the investigation into the fatal shooting of an Australian woman by an officer (all times local):

10:10 a.m.

A Minneapolis city councilwoman says she’s had positive dealings with the mayor’s pick to take over the police department, but she wonders whether it might be better to bring in an outsider.

Linea Palmisano, who represents the ward where a police officer shot an unarmed Australian woman who had called 911 last weekend, said Saturday that she’s known Assistant Police Chief Medaria Arradondo for some time. She says she’s relied on him to explain police initiatives and has always been impressed.

But the councilwoman says she thinks it might be too difficult for someone from within the department to make the cultural changes needed to curtail police violence.

Mayor Betsy Hodges on Friday nominated Arradondo to take over as police chief from Janee Harteau, who resigned at Hodges request amid the investigation into the July 15 shooting of Justine Damond.
___

8:55 a.m.

State investigators say they’ve interviewed a witness who was near the alley where a Minneapolis police officer shot and killed an unarmed Australian woman last weekend.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said in a news release Friday that the person was bicycling nearby just before the shooting and stopped and watched officers perform CPR on Justine Damond late on July 15.

An unnamed source with direct knowledge of the investigation said the witness filmed part of the encounter. It doesn’t say whether that includes the actual shooting or only the aftermath.

Damond, a 40-year-old spiritual healer from Australia who lived in Minneapolis, had called 911 to report hearing a possible sexual assault happening in the alley behind her home. Authorities say Officer Mohamed Noor fatally shot her as she approached his squad car.
___

12:45 a.m.

Minneapolis police Chief Janee Harteau says she is “willing to step aside to let a fresh set of leadership eyes” be in charge of the department.

She and the police force are facing criticism in the wake of last weekend’s fatal police shooting of 40-year-old Justine Damond, an unarmed Australian woman who had called 911.

Harteau’s resignation Friday came at the request of Mayor Betsy Hodges, who said she lost confidence in the chief.

Harteau worked her way up from the bottom of the department to become the city’s first female, first openly gay and first Native American police chief.

She said Friday that she was honored to serve as chief, but that she must “put the communities we serve first” despite the department’s accomplishments under her leadership.

Australian Woman’s Death Brings Unwelcome Attention To Somali Minnesotans

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The killing of an unarmed Australian woman by a Minneapolis police officer who is a Somali-American has turned an unwelcome spotlight on the city’s beleaguered Somali community, where many again find themselves on the defensive.

The city’s police chief said Officer Mohamed Noor‘s race and ethnicity had nothing to do with the July 15 killing of Justine Damond, who was shot after she called 911 to report a possible rape.

officer mohamed noor Australian Womans Death Brings Unwelcome Attention To Somali Minnesotans

Officer Mohamed Noor (credit: MPD)

But negative comments have included former U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann’s recent statement that Noor was an “affirmative-action hire by the hijab-wearing mayor of Minneapolis” — an apparent reference to the fact that Mayor Betsy Hodges has worn a head scarf when meeting with leaders of the city’s Somali-American community. Bachmann also suggested Noor may have shot Damond for “cultural” reasons.

But Mohamud Noor, a community advocate who is not related to the officer, said the shooting “has nothing to do with the Somali community, period.”

“It’s easy to target individuals who are from a small minority community and say, ‘See, I told you so,’ rather than focusing on the issue we have, which is a police issue.”

Damond, a white, 40-year-old spiritual teacher who was engaged to be married in August, was shot by Officer Noor as he sat in the passenger seat of a police vehicle. Noor’s partner, who was in the driver’s seat, told investigators he was startled by a loud noise immediately before Damond approached the squad car.

Noor fired across his partner and through the driver’s side window, hitting Damond once in the abdomen.

Police Chief Janee Harteau, who resigned Friday, criticized Noor’s actions but said he was well-trained. On Thursday, she dismissed the notion that he was an affirmative-action hire, saying: “This is about an individual officer’s actions. … It’s not about race or ethnicity.”

From Sunday until noon Friday, the city had logged 55 complaints to its civil rights division, many expressing concern or anger about the shooting. Several were characterized as derogatory, discriminatory or anti-Muslim. At least one death threat was made against Noor.

Minnesota is home to the largest Somali community in the United States, roughly 57,000 people according to the latest census figures, most of whom live in the Minneapolis area. The immigrants have been coming to Minnesota from their war-torn homeland since the 1990s, drawn by generous social services and the sense of community among the diaspora.

Minneapolis has made an effort in recent years to hire more Somali officers to ensure the department “reflects the city,” and Hodges said that effort will continue. The Somali officers on the force are seen as community role models, and are among the success stories of the immigrants in Minnesota.

The Somali community also is seeing its political influence grow. Ilhan Omar gained worldwide attention when she was elected to be the United States’ first Somali-American state legislator last November. Her election followed that of Abdi Warsame to the Minneapolis City Council in 2013. He was the first Somali elected to a U.S. city council. Somalis also serve on the Minneapolis and Mankato school boards.

But there have been troubles along the way, too.

More than 22 young men from the community have left the state since 2007 to join al-Shabab in Somalia, and roughly a dozen people have left in recent years to join militants in Syria, including the Islamic State group. In November, nine men were sentenced on terror charges for plotting unsuccessfully to join the group and fight in Syria.

Separately, a 20-year-old Somali-American went on a stabbing rampage at a shopping mall in St. Cloud last September, wounding 10 people before an off-duty police officer fatally shot him.

Community, city and government leaders have worked to combat such violence, with programs including a pilot project designed to counter violent extremism by bolstering social services for Somali youth. State funding was allocated to similar programs to help keep the community engaged.

Rep. Ilhan Omar (credit: CBS)

Farhio Khalif, a Somali and women’s advocate, called Damond’s shooting “unacceptable” and said the incident has taken a toll on local Somalis.

“We didn’t do anything wrong,” she said. “We are Minnesotans. We come together and light the candle as Minnesotans and treating us as different is unfair. … Just like in the Somali terrorist cases — this community is not a terrorist community.”

Abdirizak Bihi, another community advocate, said when other officers have fatally shot people, city leaders have typically reserved judgment until all facts are in and the police union has stood up for the officers. In this case, he noted, the union hasn’t been vocal and the police chief spoke out against the officer’s actions.

“What in the world is that supposed to mean?” he said. “This was completely different because of his ethnicity, and that’s what scares the hell out of us.”

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — St. Paul police have released the name of the driver who drove through a Metro Transit bus Friday, killing a 48-year-old passenger.

The crash happened at about 7:30 p.m., when a car — driven by 26-year-old Tyler Randall Bjelland — hit a vehicle while traveling eastbound on Charles Avenue.

Police say Bjelland fled the scene of what they described as a minor accident, but he soon drove through a stop sign and hit a median at Dale Street, causing his car to go airborne and pierce a bus with six to eight people on board. Bjelland’s car then erupted in flames.

A 48-year-old man was thrown from the bus and killed.

Bjelland, from Minneapolis, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of criminal vehicular homicide. Police say he may have been driving while impaired.

A 19-year-old bus passenger were taken to Regions Hospital, where he is listed in critical condition.

Bjelland was also taken to Regions with an apparent leg injury.

“I talked to some of our investigators who were on the scene, they’ve been on the job 20, 25 years,” said St. Paul Police Public Information Officer Steve Linders. “They said they’ve never seen anything like this before. Definitely horrific, definitely unnecessary. But we’re going to do our best to hold the driver accountable.”

The names of the victims have not been released.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Police are investigating an overnight stabbing in downtown Minneapolis.

The Minneapolis Police Department says the stabbing happened shortly after midnight near the corner of 4th Street and 1st Avenue North, just a block from the downtown police precinct headquarters.

The victim was transported to a hospital for emergency surgery. As of late Sunday morning, he was in stable condition.

No arrests have been made.

Police say the victim and a witness were uncooperative with officers, so there is no suspect description.

Harteau Again Thanks Community, Encourages Support For Arradondo

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Former Minneapolis Police Chief Janee Harteau has issued a statement of thanks for the outpouring of support she’s received since stepping down from her post as the city’s top cop.

In a Facebook posting Sunday, Harteau said that she’s “overwhelmed with humility and appreciation” over the flood of support she’s received this weekend.

“I love this city, the members of the MPD and all of you,” she wrote. “You are the reason I have done this work for three decades.”

—–

On Friday, Harteau resigned as chief of the Minneapolis Police Department amid controversy over her response to the fatal police shooting of Justine Damond.

Her resignation came at the request of Mayor Betsy Hodges, whom Harteau had clashed with in the past. Meanwhile, Hodges is also facing calls to step down from her office, which she’s seeking to hold in the up-coming mayoral race.

Early last week, Harteau endured criticism for not immediately cutting short her vacation to handle the aftermath of the Damond shooting, which quickly made international headlines.

Forty-year-old Damond, a yoga teacher and Australian native, was fatally shot last weekend by Minneapolis officer Mohamed Noor after calling 911 over a possible sexual assault occurring in the alley behind her home.

The shooting remains under investigation. Noor has yet to give a statement to investigators, and Harteau has described his actions as those of single individual, not reflective of the police department’s training or practices.

Replacing Harteau as chief for the time being is Medaria Arradondo, the mayor’s pick for the city’s next top cop. However, others in city government question if a Minneapolis police veteran should be the new leader of the embattled department.

In her Facebook post Sunday, Harteau described Arradondo as an “honorable, caring man.” She called for the community to give him all the support that was shown to her.

“He was a great chief of staff, newly appointed assistant chief and now chief,” she wrote. “We done so much together to improve trust and police service. There is still more that needs to be done.”

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (AP) — Eau Claire police say an officer has fatally shot a 59-year-old man after he fired a shotgun at authorities.

Police chief Jerry Staniszewski said Sunday that the department received a request the night before to check the welfare of the man, who made “homicidal and suicidal” comments to an acquaintance. Staniszewski says officers found the man standing outside with a handgun when they arrived at his residence.

Staniszewski says the man retreated into the residence and refused to cooperate during crisis negotiation, threatening to shoot officers on scene. The police chief says the man at one point fired a shotgun through a window at authorities.

Staniszewski says a sergeant who has served with Eau Claire police for eight years then shot the man. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Authorities are investigating a fire early Sunday morning on the Minneapolis riverfront that they believe was set intentionally.

The Minneapolis Fire Department responded to the blaze shortly after 4 a.m. on the 1100 block of West Lake Street. Authorities say the building is under construction and is believed to be a hotel being built.

Firefighters were able to put the fire out quickly, and nobody was injured at the scene. Fire officials say the blaze likely started after debris was set on fire inside the structure.

Authorities are investigating the fire as arson, and anyone with information should call Minneapolis police.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Authorities are investigating after a suspect was injured in an officer-involved shooting Sunday night in central Minnesota.

Willmar police responded at about 5:30 p.m. Sunday to a report of a suicidal male at a home on the 400 block of 11th Street NW in Willmar. Two officers responded to the scene and when they arrived, they located male subject in the backyard of the home holding a gun.

Authorities say at one point during the incident, both officers fired their weapons and injured the suspect. The man was treated at the scene before being taken to Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar and eventually airlifted to St. Cloud Hospital. Nobody else was hurt in the incident.

Both officers were placed on administrative leave, which is standard in police-involved shootings. The police department does not have body cameras, and squad cameras didn’t capture the incident.

The BCA says the incident is under investigation, with assistance from the Minnesota State Patrol and the Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Office.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Family members and others gathered in the Milwaukee neighborhood where a 6-year-old boy was killed in a hail of gunfire.

Neighbors knocked on doors Sunday and encouraged anyone who saw what happened to come forward with information that could help police catch those responsible for the death of Justin Evans Jr.

Family members say Justin was visiting his grandmother’s house and was heading out on a fishing trip Saturday evening. They say Justin was running to the house to tell his mother he was leaving when gun shots rang out in the yard and he was hit.

Justin’s aunt, Dakota Jones, says he was full of joy and positive energy and was eager to start first grade. An autopsy is expected to be done Monday.

Driver Charged After 9 Die Is Sweltering Semi Truck

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — The driver of a broiling tractor-trailer found packed with immigrants outside a Walmart in San Antonio was charged Monday in the deaths of 10 of his passengers and could face the death penalty.

James Matthew Bradley Jr., 60, of Clearwater, Florida, awaited an appearance in federal court later in the day to face charges of illegally transporting immigrants for financial gain, resulting in death.

Authorities discovered eight bodies inside the crowded 18-wheeler parked in the summer heat, and two more victims died at the hospital. Officials feared the death toll could rise because nearly 20 others rescued from the truck were in dire condition, many suffering from extreme dehydration and heatstroke.

A passenger told authorities that they took turns breathing through a hole in the trailer and pounding on the walls to try to get the driver’s attention, according to court papers.

“We’re looking at a human-trafficking crime,” San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said Sunday, calling it “a horrific tragedy.”

It was not immediately known whether Bradley had an attorney who could speak on his behalf.

Bradley told investigators that the trailer had been sold and he was transporting it from Iowa to Brownsville, Texas, and that he was unaware that there were people inside until he parked and got out to urinate.

After hearing banging and shaking, he opened the door and was “surprised when he was run over by ‘Spanish’ people and knocked to the ground,” according to the complaint.

Bradley allegedly told investigators that he knew the trailer refrigeration system didn’t work and that the four ventilation holes were probably clogged. He also said he did not call 911, even though he realized that several people already were dead.

A passenger told investigators that he and others crossed the Mexican border into the U.S. illegally by raft and were then guided into the trailer to be taken north to San Antonio, according to the criminal complaint. The passenger said the immigrants inside the truck soon began to struggle breathe.

The victims “were very hot to the touch. So these people were in this trailer without any signs of any type of water,” Fire Chief Charles Hood said.

It was the latest smuggling-by-truck operation to end in tragedy. In one of the worst cases on record in the U.S., 19 immigrants locked inside a stifling rig died in Victoria, Texas, in 2003.

Based on initial interviews with survivors of the San Antonio case, more than 100 people may have been packed into the back of the truck at one point in its journey, said Thomas Homan, acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Officials said 39 people were inside when rescuers arrived, and the rest were believed to have escaped or hitched rides to their next destination.

At least some of those in the truck were from Mexico and Guatemala, according to diplomats from the two countries.

Latin Americans who enter the U.S. illegally often rely on smuggling networks that use safe houses and various vehicles to help them reach their destination.

“Even though they have the driver in custody, I can guarantee you there’s going to be many more people we’re looking for to prosecute,” Homan said.

The truck had an Iowa license plate and was registered to Pyle Transportation Inc. of Schaller, Iowa. A company official did not immediately respond to a phone message seeking comment.

San Antonio is about a 150-mile (240-kilometer) drive from the Mexican border. The temperature in San Antonio reached 101 degrees (38 Celsius) on Saturday and didn’t dip below 90 degrees (32 C) until after 10 p.m.

The tragedy came to light after a person from the truck approached a Walmart employee and asked for water late Saturday night or early Sunday morning, said McManus, the police chief. The employee gave the person water and then called police.

On Sunday evening, about 100 people gathered at a San Antonio church for a vigil to mourn the dead.

Immigrants’ rights activists and church officials held up handmade signs reading “Who here is not an immigrant” and “No human is illegal.”

Those gathered held a moment of silence, then gave speeches blaming federal and Texas authorities’ hard-line immigration policies for contributing to the deaths by forcing immigrants to take greater risks to reach the U.S.

“These tragedies are compounded when it’s incredibly dangerous and incredibly expensive and we push migration into the hands of illicit actors,” immigration activist Bob Libal said in a telephone interview.

In the May 2003 case, the immigrants were being taken from South Texas to Houston. Prosecutors said the driver heard them begging and screaming for their lives but refused to free them. The driver was sentenced to nearly 34 years in prison.

The Border Patrol has reported at least four truck seizures this month in and around Laredo, Texas. On July 7, agents found 72 people crammed into a truck with no means of escape, the agency said. They were from Mexico, Ecuador, Guatemala and El Salvador.

Authorities in Mexico have also made a number of similar discoveries over the years.

His vehicle went airborne and sliced through a Metro Transit bus carrying between six and eight people. His car then burst into flames.

Authorities say 48-year-old Kenneth J. Foster was thrown from the bus and killed. Another 19-year-old passenger on the bus was taken to Regions Hospital and is in critical condition. Other passengers on the bus suffered minor injuries.

Witnesses of the crash observed Bjelland driving erratically and at a high rate of speed just before the crash. Authorities suspect he may have been driving while impaired.
