MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – An armed robbery suspect is jailed and awaiting charges after being shot and wounded by police in north Minneapolis.

Police say on Monday afternoon they were conducting surveillance on 24-year-old Derrel Pruitt, who they say has been connected with multiple armed robberies in Minneapolis and other cities. After pulling over the car he was riding in for a traffic stop, Pruitt jumped out of a car, holding a shotgun.

As Pruitt fled on foot, an officer tried to grab Pruitt’s coat as he was removing it. That’s when the shotgun fell to the ground.

Police said officers gave chase and ordered Pruitt to stop. One of the officers feared Pruitt was reaching for a weapon and shot him.

Pruitt was treated for his injuries and then jailed.

NewsRadio 830 WCCO’s Steve Murphy Reports

“Thank goodness none of our officers were hurt — or any innocent bystanders in this situation,” said Sgt. Steve McCarty, a Minneapolis Police spokesperson.

McCarty said police really wanted to get this suspect, noting he’s wanted in a dozen armed robberies in the Twin Cities in just the past month.

The Hennepin County Attorney is considering multiple charges.

The officer who shot Pruitt has been placed on a three-day administrative leave, which is standard procedure, according to McCarty. That officer has not yet been identified.

CARVER, Minn. (WCCO) – A 27-year-old Blaine man is accused of robbing gas station in Mayer at gunpoint on Saturday and injuring a store clerk, according to charges filed Tuesday in Carver County Court.

Demetrius Charles Edward Derden was charged with first-degree aggravated robbery and second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon in connection with the incident.

According to a criminal complaint, Derden entered the Mayer Oil Company gas station on the 300 block of Ash Avenue North in Mayer at 8:39 p.m. Saturday. He had an umbrella in one hand to hide his face from surveillance video and a gun in the other hand. Derden walked behind the counter and pointed the hand gun at the clerk. He then put a bag on a stool and demanded cash from the clerk.

The clerk opened a safe and handed money to Derden, the complaint states. The clerk then told Derden he didn’t have the combination to unlock the upper safe, and Derden placed the barrel of his gun against the back of the clerk’s neck and told him “You better remember, your life depends on it.”

According to the complaint, the clerk then heard a “click” sound come from the gun and believed that the gun was emptied, so he turned around and started to stand up. Derden pushed the clerk back down and hit the clerk on the side of his head with the barrel of the gun.

The clerk later told authorities he then began to “fight for his life.” A struggle between the two ensued and Derden bit the clerk’s finger and struck the clerk with the gun. The clerk managed to punch Derden in the groin, head butt him, wrestle the gun away and strike him in the head with the gun, the complaint states.

Derden eventually got into a car and fled the scene after the clerk was able to pull a mask off his face. A customer getting gas found the store clerk bloodied on the floor behind the counter. The clerk had suffered injuries to his face, finger, head and body, including a deep cut on his head that went all the way down to his skull, requiring stitches.

Derden was eventually identified as a check card in his name was found at the scene. The photo on his driver’s license was also matched with surveillance video.

If convicted on both charges, Derden faces up to 27 years in prison and $49,000 in fines. According to court documents, Derden also has a criminal past including theft, receiving a stolen firearm, first-degree aggravated robbery and simple robbery.

She said she cooperated and gave the man a small amount of cash, but he tied her hands and feet before he fled the home.

She was able to free herself around the time a relative arrived at the home and then she called police. She wasn’t injured.

The man wore a ski mask during the incident. He is described as being 5-foot-7 to 5-foot-8, he had a medium build and appeared to be a “younger” man according to the victim.

Pregnant Woman With Shotgun Thwarts Burglars

COON RAPIDS, Minn. (WCCO) — It’s the last thing two burglary suspects expected to hear when they broke into a Coon Rapids home. From within the house came the unmistakable sound of a pump shotgun. At the other end of that gun was a 22-year-old woman who is nine weeks pregnant.

The young woman asked not to be identified because the two suspects are still at large. However, she says when the men ignored her barking pit bull and black lab, and broke through a kitchen door, she had no other choice but to chamber a round into the 12-gauge shotgun.

There’s perhaps no other sound that commands as much respect and fear. The young woman at the business end of that gun was home alone and prepared to protect herself.

It all happened in broad daylight on Monday afternoon. That’s when the first man walked up to her kitchen door and began pounding and ringing the doorbell. He was clearly checking to see if anyone was home.

The woman recalls, “He started ringing the doorbell, probably 50 times, fast — ding, ding, ding, ding!”

The woman, who is nine weeks pregnant, was feeling sick and was in her bed. Not expecting anyone to visit, she called her boyfriend and then phoned police.

“About three minutes later, my dogs started barking again and I looked out the window and now there are two guys standing outside my home,” the woman recalled.

Within mere seconds, she heard the loud “bang” of the kitchen door being kicked open. With footsteps coming her way, she quietly stepped upstairs.

“So then I hustled up the stairs to grab our gun, and I came down and I loaded it and cocked it,” said the homeowner.

With a single pump of her 12-gauge shotgun, the would-be burglars bolted out the door and through the backyard.

“Yes, a shotgun racking is something you don’t forget if you’ve ever heard one. So, it frightened these two suspects off right away, they took off running,” said Coon Rapids Police Captain John Hattstrom.

They ran across the backyard and into a nearby church parking lot where they were seen getting into a two-door, newer model automobile. But they didn’t escape without notice. The woman was able to get a long look at the two and provided police with a description.

A police sketch of one of the men shows him wearing a slight beard and wearing a dark cap. He is described as in his mid-20s, about 5’8″ to 5’10″ tall and weighing around 160 pounds. He was wearing a tan-color Carhartt-style jacket with a fur-like collar, dark jeans and possibly dark work boots.

The other suspect is also a white male in his mid-20s and about 6’0″ tall. He was also unshaven and wearing a black or dark blue Carhartt-style jacket.

They were brazen would-be burglars who met their match, with a convincing sound.

“I’m pregnant and I wasn’t about to go down with nothing, with two men double my size and me here,” said the young woman.

Anyone with information is asked to call Coon Rapids Police at 763-767-6481 or after-hours at 763-427-1212.

A reward of up to $500 is being offered for information that leads to the men’s arrests.

Charges: Man Harrassed Neighbors For Years

HASTINGS, Minn. (WCCO) – An Eagan man is accused of stalking and harassing his neighbors, as well as vandalizing their property, over the course of years.

According to the criminal complaint filed in Dakota County, neighbors of 47-year-old Michael John Gunderson say they reported incidents of vandalism starting in 2007. Eagan Police detectives arrested Gunderson on Friday afternoon at his home off Birchpond Road.

Investigators said the neighbors reported that year that someone started their garden hose and left it running in their window well. They also reported that year that someone put water into their furnace’s air intake, damaging the equipment.

The next year, the victims reported their telephone and cable lines had been cut, their tree had been cut in half, their hummingbird feeder had been tossed into the back woods, and the grounding connecter on their air conditioning unit had been removed.

“It’s been very damaging, costing them a lot of money to fix some of these problems,” said Danielle Anselment, spokeswoman with the Eagan Police Department.

A neighbor also installed a surveillance camera in the summer of 2008 to catch the vandal in the act. That person reported to police that Gunderson had trained a laser beam on the camera to disable it. The charges state officers found that a laser had indeed been set up on Gunderson’s deck.

The criminal complaint goes on to detail incidents of harassment in 2010. The victims claimed Gunderson made obscene gestures to them while they were in their yard, yelling expletives.

This year, police determined that Gunderson had been distributing at least eight letters throughout the neighborhood claiming that one of his two neighbors was an “ultra pervert.” Police said Gunderson signed the letters “Terra Glenn Guy.”

Eagan Police Chief James McDonald was also a victim.

“It went to my boss, and I’m certainly not happy about it,” he said about a letter sent to the Eagan City Administrator in August of this year. “To go home, tell your family about things that happened at work today is kind of concerning.”

The letter outlines lies about department corruption. It talked specifically about an Eagan detective organizing sex parties involving prostitutes. It also alleged that McDonald is involved in all misconduct in the department.

“As a public official, I get I can be criticized for the work that I do,” said Chief McDonald. “Where I draw the line is when someone lies about my character.”

Police were able to trace the letters sent to the City Administrator and neighbors back to Gunderson based on the stamp meter numbers.

Investigators say, in another letter, he claimed to have been run out of the room during an Eagan Citizen’s Crime Prevention Association meeting by its president, who is identified as one of the two victims of harassment in the criminal complaint.

When confronted by investigators, Gunderson called one of his two neighbors a “f—ing b—-” and said the other was a “pervert.” When police questioned him about whether he could’ve explored other avenues regarding his concerns, he agreed.

Gunderson has been charged with one felony count of engaging in a pattern of stalking conduct, and also one gross misdemeanor charge of stalking.

The criminal complaint also says that Eagan Police ran a records check on Gunderson and found that he had previously been charged with stalking and harassment in Rogers, Minn. back in 2005, accusing someone of being a child molester. The complaint says the case was dismissed so long as certain compliance conditions were met.

ST. CLOUD, Minn. (WCCO) – A 24-year-old man is in jail after police say they found a video camera in a bathroom at a St. Cloud shopping mall.

On Monday, Joshua Lavalle was arrested at his home in Rice, located just north of St. Cloud. He now faces a felony charge and he remains in custody at the Stearns County jail.

Police won’t say how long the camera had been recording or who found it.

“Honestly, my personal opinion is … someone who is wrong in the head. I’m sure there were little kids in there. It’s sick. It’s wrong,” said shopper Nicole Nelson.

Wrong and invasive, indeed, but on Nov. 25, Black Friday, St. Cloud Police say Lavalle put a camera in one of the Crossroads Mall’s restrooms.

Police won’t say how many victims there were or if they have identified or notified any of the victims. A representative of the mall said they have taken the necessary precautions to make sure the restrooms are safe.

For some holiday shoppers, however, the damage is already done.

“I’ll still come here to shop, but I won’t use the restrooms,” said shopper Adrian Krzesowik.
Because the investigation is ongoing, police won’t say where Lavalle allegedly placed the camera or what his intentions were.

A police representative said the reason they are not releasing any more details right now is because they believe other businesses outside of the mall may also be victims of Lavalle.

They were granted a search warrant to go inside of Lavalle’s home and they are expected to release more information about the case in the coming days.

She was initially expected to get probation last spring, until then authorities found out she was still using an American Express gift cards after the judge ordered them seized by the FBI.

The judge was outraged and gave her the maximum sentence, which included paying about $36,000 in restitution and serve five years of probation.

Meanwhile, former auto mogul Denny Hecker is serving out his 10-year sentence in a prison camp in Duluth. The two were married in an over-the-phone ceremony in February.

BURNSVILLE, Minn. (WCCO) – A 46-year-old Hastings woman is accused of stealing another woman’s mail and cashing a paycheck valued at $1,000, according to charges filed Wednesday in Dakota County Court.

Elizabeth Joan Orner was charged with one felony count of mail theft in connection with the incident, which happened last Thursday.

According to a criminal complaint, Burnsville Police responded to a residence last Thursday on a report of mail theft. When authorities arrived, a woman told police that at about 2:25 p.m. that day she saw a pick-up truck pull up to her mail box and saw a passenger in the front seat take her outgoing mail.

While police were speaking with the victim, she got a call from Wells Fargo bank asking if she had written a check to Orner for $1,000, and she said she did not. A woman later identified as Orner attempted to deposit one of the victim’s checks into her account.

Police found Orner and spoke to her. She denied taking the mail but admitted she was there when it was taken. She told police she was with a friend at the time who asked her to do this with him in the past. They would take the mail and then pass the checks.

If convicted, Orner faces up to three years in prison and $5,000 in fines.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – An 18-year-old Minneapolis man who was one of three accused in the January shooting death of Stanley Rogers was found guilty in Hennepin County Court on Wednesday.

Gary Tyrone Griffin was found guilty of second-degree murder and attempted first-degree aggravated robbery in connection with the incident. Lordiss Stewart, 17 of Blaine, pleaded guilty to attempted aggravated robbery last month and Ladell Johnson, 19 of Minneapolis, has a court hearing on Monday.

According to court documents, Minneapolis Police responded to a report of shots fired at about 9:50 p.m. on Jan. 21 on 37th Street East in an alley between Third Avenue South and Clinton Avenue South. When authorities arrived to the scene, they found a van against a garage with its engine running and Rogers dead from gunshot wounds.

A criminal complaint states that Stewart told Griffin that Rogers was coming to pick her up and that he often has crack cocaine and money on him. Griffin said he wanted to rob Rogers as soon as he got there, but Stewart told him to wait until she returned with Rogers. She sent Griffin a text message as they were approaching the house where Stewart was staying.

Griffin, despite his family’s plea to allow him to be home during the holidays on an electronic monitoring device, will remain in the Hennepin County Jail until he is sentenced on Jan. 12. His attorney said he will likely get more than 25 years in prison.

ST. CLOUD, Minn. (WCCO) – Police said eight people were victims after someone planted a video camera in the bathroom of a St. Cloud shopping mall.

On Monday, Joshua Lavalle was arrested at his home in Rice, located just north of St. Cloud. He now faces a felony charge.

Police said the 24-year-old Lavalle placed a cell phone camera inside one of the Crossroads Mall’s family restrooms, near the food court, on Black Friday. Someone using the bathroom noticed the phone under a sink with the red light flashing. He removed the phone and gave it to police.

On Wednesday, police said they believed eight people were victims in the case, but they couldn’t identify any of them because of where the camera was placed.

A police representative said they believe it’s possible some other businesses outside of the mall may also be victims of Lavalle.

They were granted a search warrant to search Lavalle’s phone and found several photos and videos. Police then contacted Lavalle’s girlfriend who said they were at Crossroads Mall on Nov. 25 and during that time Lavalle left to use the restroom several times. She told police he said he wasn’t feeling well.

Police say of the victims recorded in the family restroom, at least two appeared to be young boys and four were women.

‘Man In Black:’ Authorities Hunting For Metro Bank Robber

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Local police and federal agents are on the hunt for the robber nicknamed the “Man in Black.” He’s a bank robber whose M.O. has been dressing in black clothing head to toe while holding up at least six Twin Cities banks at gunpoint.

FBI agents call the man beneath the head-to-toe black clothing controlling, deliberate and potentially dangerous. The robberies have been in Richfield, Bloomington, Minneapolis and Hopkins. In each, he went directly to the teller line, flashed a gun, demanded cash and then quickly left.

FBI agent Kyle Loven said for now, it appears he’s using the gun to take control of the bank and its customers.

“Anyone that would show a gun and threaten bank customers and employees, it’s hard to speculate what they may or may not do,” said Loven.

It was during the most recent robbery in Hopkins Monday where something changed. The robber wore a tan jacket.

“In some instances, their M.O. is so deliberate and thorough, it becomes routine,” said Loven. “Typically, they want to get into that repetitive pattern, that routine, so the act of robbery becomes familiar.”

Loven says it’s not unusual for criminals to create a pattern as this serial robber has, and establishing a pattern puts the robber in a new mindset. Serial robberies are rare and often fueled by things like gambling or drug problems.

The last time a serial bank robber plagued metro banks was 2005. John Whitrock earned the name the “Fishing Hat Bandit” until he was arrested and convicted of 21 robberies.

Whitrock claimed a gambling problem fueled his sprees. He is currently serving a 15 year prison sentence.

Investigators say there’s no clear pattern in the Man in Black’s targets. The times and locations have varied.

Few witnesses have reported seeing how the Man in Black gets away. The FBI says in all three cases, he was seen driving off in a white or cream colored vehicle. It’s not clear if it’s a car or SUV though.

EDINA, Minn. (WCCO) – Police say a woman was robbed at gunpoint in the parking lot outside Southdale Mall Tuesday evening.

According to police, the robbery happened at about 8:30 p.m.

Police described the suspect as a 6-foot-tall black male weighing about 200 pounds. He was seen wearing a black sport coat, a black fedora-style hat, sunglasses, black gloves and a plaid scarf.

Authorities said the suspect may have been driving a dark, four-door sedan.

News of the armed robbery took many shoppers by surprise.

Jodi Sticha said she shops at Southdale regularly and doesn’t think twice.

“It just seems like such a great area and you don’t expect to see that here,” she said.

Others — even long-time Edina residents have a different take when it comes to public safety.

“It does not surprise me at all, no,” said Dave Langholz, who has lived in Edina since 1960. “The economic situation probably makes people a little more desperate.”

“I guess nothing surprises me at this point, if people are going to want to steal something, they’re going to steal something,” said Joe Stradcutter.

While Southdale Center said these kinds of incidents are extremely rare, they say they do post common precautions to remind shoppers to be safe: park in a well-lit area, know where your car is, have your keys out and hide your valuables.

“I don’t leave things out because that’s temptation for people, that’d be stupid on my part if I were going to do that,” Langholz said.

“I’m not too concerned about it, but, you never know,” said Stradcutter.

As for crime at Southdale, according to the Edina Police Department’s website, there have been 10 shop lifting incidents, one case of stolen personal property and one stolen purse in the last three months.

At nearby Ridgedale Center and Eden Prairie Center, officials say they are already on heightened awareness during the holiday rush.

Anyone with any information about the armed robbery at Southdale is asked to contact Edina Police at 952-826-1600.

Bloomington Police say they’ve had reports of two similar robberies to the one described at Southdale. According to police, a man with a similar description and similar vehicle, robbed two women in the city this week.

The first occurred around 8 p.m. Monday as a woman was leaving Lunds near Normandale and 98th Street. She said she noticed a car following her as she drove home and stopped to get the mail. She was then approached by a man with a black pistol, matching the description of the Southdale incident except that he also had a white bandage on his nose.

The man demanded the woman’s purse and her PIN numbers and told the woman not to call police or he would come back and kill her.

He then took her purse and fled the scene. The purse was later recovered.

Then, before 6 a.m. Thursday, another similar incident occurred as a woman was pulling into a parking lot at the Caribou on Old Shakopee Road and France Avenue. After getting coffee and returning to her vehicle, the woman was approached by a man with a pistol who demanded her purse.

A slight struggle ensued and the victim called for help. At that point, the man kicked the woman to the ground, grabbed her purse and fled in a vehicle.

Mpls. Police: Protect Yourself From Snowblower Thefts

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — It’s the season for holiday shopping and — apparently for some — snowblower stealing. It’s a crime Minneapolis police say they see all too much of this time of year.

There have been at least four snowblower thefts in south Minneapolis in the last couple of weeks. The thieves are stealing some of the snowblowers right out of people’s garages.

Don Landin’s south Minneapolis garage was a target.

“This was convenient for them to grab,” he said.

Last weekend, thieves visited his detached garage. They took Landin’s snowblower inside, as well as a gokart and chainsaw.

“I was sad to see (the gokart) go, and I was pretty angry for a while, too,” said Landin’s son, Nathaniel, who was fixing it up with his dad.

The family thinks that thieves saw them working on it.

“So, while here for the gokart, they took the chainsaw and they took the snowblower as well,” Landin said.

Police say besides using strong locks on garage doors, and taking door openers with you when you leave your car, you should paint some part of your snowblower a bright color to make identification quicker and easier. Also, police say to keep detailed records of the snowblower and take pictures of it.

Use a padlock in the garage door track as an additional lock to keep burglars from opening the door if they get inside.

Secure any side doors with a heavy duty deadbolt lock and strike plate. And, use your vehicle to block the snowblower inside the garage, so thieves can’t get away with it.
