MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak announced his intention to nominate the current assistant chief of the Minneapolis Police Department to succeed Tim Dolan after his retirement.

Rybak said he will formally nominate Janeé Harteau next January, and then the City Council will deliberate on whether to confirm her nomination.

If she is confirmed, she would become the first female chief of police in the city’s history.

“For many years, I have seen Janeé Harteau make our city safer, including during some of our toughest crises. She has succeeded at every step: on the street, at the downtown command and in our top administration,” said Rybak in a press release. “She is a smart cop, a savvy administrator and a natural leader. She is the logical next chief, and will be an exceptional one.”

Dolan is set to retire after being with the city police department since 1983. He previously worked in the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Department as a deputy.
