MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Three people are indicted of first-degree premeditated murder in the drug-related shooting death of a Minneapolis man in March.
Maureen Onyelobi (pictured), David Johnson and Maurice Wilson were indicted Friday by a grand jury, according to the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office.
On the night of March 8, Minneapolis Police responded to reports of gunshots near 28th Street and Longfellow Avenue. When they arrived, they found 23-year-old Anthony Fairbanks slumped against a snowbank with a gunshot wound to the head.
Fairbanks’ family told police they overheard him tell someone on the phone that he was “coming alone” right before he left his mother’s house. Phone records showed the caller was a person named “Black,” who supplied Fairbanks with heroin.
“Black” was later determined to be 28-year-old Maureen Onyelobi, whose boyfriend had been indicted alongside Fairbanks in a federal gun case. Onyelobi’s boyfriend confided to her in call from jail on March 8 that Fairbanks might talk to the police.
The murder weapon was found by police in a storage locker safe rented by Onyelobi, and surveillance footage of her van at the locker matched descriptions provided by witnesses at the murder scene.
All three defendants are in custody, but Maurice Wilson is in North Dakota on a federal gun charge. The roles of Wilson and David Johnson in Fairbanks’ murder have not been made public.
Onyelobi was previously charged with second degree murder in this case.
She could faces up to 40 years in prison.
