MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — A 16-year-old boy who allegedly shot his older brother in Columbia Heights Monday afternoon has turned himself in.

Police officers were dispatched at 3:33 p.m. to an apartment on the 1700 block of 37th Avenue Northeast after a woman called 911 and said her 19-year-old son was shot by his brother.

The 16-year-old suspect, whose full identity is known to police, fled the scene prior to law enforcement’s arrival. A perimeter search was unsuccessful and the suspect was not found. It’s believed he still had a handgun in his possession when he fled.

Witnesses at the scene told police that the suspect was playing with the gun while pointing it at his brother before the shooting occurred.

The 19-year-old victim was taken to the Hennepin County Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

On Tuesday, the suspect turned himself into the Hennepin County Juvenile Detention Center. Columbia Heights Police then picked him up and took him back to Anoka County where he remains in custody.

The case remains under investigation.
