Police were called to the 1600 block of Newton Avenue North just before 2 a.m. Sunday on a report of a shooting.
They found the boy on the ground in front of a home. He was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead later that morning.
On Monday, the medical examiner’s office identified the victim as Neahemiah Steverson, of Minneapolis. He died as a result of a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
His death has been classified as a homicide. Minneapolis Police are still investigating the incident.
Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges released a statement on the shooting Monday, saying: “Today as a community we mourn the death of Nehemiah Steverson. He was killed this weekend, the victim of gun violence. I offer my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and all who knew him.
“As a people we cannot tolerate senseless violence. One death is too many and certainly Nehemiah’s death is too many.”
