MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — The vest of northern Minnesota sheriff’s deputy caught a bullet for him Tuesday morning, officials say, when he was shot in the back by the older brother of the teenager he was arresting.

The shooting happened at around 8:30 a.m. when the deputy stopped a pickup truck near Perley, Minn., at the intersection of County Road 39 and County Road 12, the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension says.

Inside the truck were two brothers: 19-year-old Steven Henderson (pictured) and 18-year-old William Henderson. When the deputy tried to arrest the younger brother on an outstanding warrant, Steven Henderson allegedly shot the deputy in the back.

The deputy returned fire, but missed, the BCA said. Henderson then took the truck and drove off.

What followed was a manhunt that involved 70 officers from more than a dozen law enforcement agencies.

At about 10:30 a.m., authorities found Henderson in a vacant farmstead about three miles north of where the shooting happened. He was arrested without incident and was taken to the Northwest Regional Corrections Center in Crookston, Minn.

An ambulance took the injured deputy — who has not been named — to Essentia Hospital in Fargo, N. D., where he was treated and released. He was also placed on administrative leave, which is standard practice after an officer-involved shooting.

The younger Henderson brother was being held Tuesday in the Northwest Regional Corrections Center until he can be transferred to Pennington County. That’s where the arrest warrant on him was initially issued.

The shooting remains under investigation, the BCA says.
