HOPKINS, Minn. (WCCO) – Criminal charges could be filed after an April Fools’ Day prank led to a response from the Hopkins police and fire departments.

According to officers, an unnamed 18-year-old texted his mother on Tuesday telling her that the kitchen in their house was on fire and he was evacuating.

His mother, who was not home at the time, then called the fire department. While crews were en route to the scene, the 18-year-old texted again, telling his mother that it was all an April Fools’ joke. Some of the first responders were already at the scene before the hoax was made clear.

Both the police and fire departments are looking into the case, and the Hopkins city attorney will decide whether criminal charges can be filed.
