ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) — A 30-year-old man is charged with second-degree attempted murder after a shooting at a popular downtown St. Paul sports bar Friday night.

St. Paul Police responded just after 11:30 p.m. Friday to Tom Reid’s Bar on 258 W. 7th St. on a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers found the victim laying on his back on the ground, with a gunshot wound to the chest.

The victim was conscious and able to tell police the shooter was an acquaintance, identified as Patrick Timothy Juetten, of Woodbury, Minn.

According to the criminal charges, the shooting occurred outside the bar, on the patio. A witness said he was having a cigarette and talking to his friend when Juetten came up behind them with a “pissed off look” on his face.

The witness told police Juetten pulled out a gun and pointed it at his friend but his friend laughed it off, saying he knew Juetten. Juetten then put the gun back in his coat pocket, according to charges.

The witness told police he walked back into the bar and a short time later, was told his friend had been shot.

Police spoke with the victim in the hospital who said he knew Juetten from high school, where they played hockey together. He said Juetten called him out of the blue and they agreed to meet at Tom Reid’s. He said Juetten was trying to pass himself off as a cop, wearing a fake badge and carrying a handgun. He told the victim he wanted to “rob drug dealers” and tried to talk the victim into participating.

When the victim refused, he said Juetten shot him in the chest from about two feet away, according to the charges.

Medics transported the victim to Regions Hospital, where physicians say the bullet entered his chest at close range, pierced his lung, broke a rib and entered his liver, doing extensive damage. He’s said to be stable, but the injuries to his liver are extremely serious, according to the complaint.

Woodbury Police located and arrested Juetten on Saturday at a hotel he and his girlfriend had checked into, which was near his residence.

Juetten told police he was at Tom Reid’s and had been drinking a lot. He said he gave his car keys to a stranger so the man could get cigarettes out of his vehicle and that he had the handgun in the car. He said the stranger came back with his handgun and shot the victim at close range. He told police he panicked and fled the scene — and that he didn’t know what happened to his gun.

If convicted, Juetten could face up to 20 years in prison.
