MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – An alleged drunk driver who struck and killed a bicyclist Monday night was charged Friday with criminal vehicular homicide.

According to the Hennepin County Attorney’s office, John Iverson, 49, faces up to 10 years in prison in the death of 26-year-old Marcus Nalls.

Witnesses say Iverson sped west down Franklin Avenue Monday night when he suddenly swerved towards the curb, hit Nalls off of his bike and then ran him over.

According to the criminal complaint, Iverson continued driving down the block until his van stopped after hitting a dumpster.

His blood-alcohol content was 0.27, which is more than three times the legal limit. The toxicology results are pending.

Officers said he smelled of alcohol and admitted he had “too much” to drink. They also said he stumbled out of his van and had difficulty walking and keeping his balance.

Iverson posted $150,000 bail, and is expected to make his first court appearance on Monday.

Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman calls this an “unnecessary tragic” incident, and he’s requesting that Iverson wear an ankle bracelet and lose his driving privileges.

Nalls had just recently moved to the Twin Cities from Atlanta, and was described as an experienced bicyclist. He was wearing a helmet and was using a bike light during the fatal accident.
