MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – An attempt by the U.S. Marshal Service to execute an arrest warrant led to a car chase and an exchange of gunfire on a busy northeast Minneapolis street Wednesday afternoon.

According to Minneapolis Police, the U.S. Marshal Service was executing the warrant near 13th Avenue and Grand Street Northeast.

The suspect, 49-year-old Buck Otto White of New Ulm, fled in an SUV. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, White was indicted in late Feb. 2013 for firearm possession – a crime due to his classification by the federal government as an armed career criminal.

Authorities attempted to stop White four blocks away on 16th Avenue and Marshall Street when gunfire was exchanged. No one was struck, and White fled again.

The chase continued for four miles until White hit a snow bank and tried to flee on foot near Southeast 33rd and Como avenues, where he was captured soon after.

White, also known as Timothy Joseph Hoffman, has several prior convictions, including two for second-degree burglary in 1984 and 1995 in Hennepin and Kanabec counties, first-degree attempted burglary in 1991 in Anoka County, fourth-degree assault in 1994 in Anoka County and a first-degree attempted violation in the controlled substance law in 2006 in Hennepin County.
