IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – An attorney for a man charged in the 1997 slaying of his wife in Iowa City says he hasn’t decided whether to challenge his extradition from Minnesota.

John Bloomfield is expected to appear in court Thursday in St. Paul. The 73-year-old has been jailed since his arrest last week at his St. Paul home.

The former University of Iowa researcher is accused of killing 57-year-old Frances Bloomfield at the home they shared in Iowa City.

Public defender Mary Mateer says she believes Bloomfield will decide Thursday whether to agree to Iowa’s extradition request or to challenge it. She’s been representing Bloomfield, but isn’t sure whether his family will hire a private lawyer before then.

Iowa City attorney Leon Spies says he’ll represent Bloomfield if and when the case reaches Iowa.
