MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – City officials want residents and businesses to know of a scam targeting Xcel Energy customers.
The scammer(s) impersonates an Xcel Energy employee and tells victims that they are late on a payment and that they need to make one immediately. And if the victims refuse to do so, the scammer threatens to shut off their power.
The scammer then directs victims to buy prepaid debit cards for payment, the city says. That’s the not method Xcel uses to collect late payments.
In the last week, there have been several attempts to scam downtown businesses.
For more information, go to Xcel Energy’s website.
If you have questions or information regarding the scam, call police at 612-673-5131.
