MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Mikayla Chuma of Bloomington spends her Fridays in Uptown.

“I like all the stores, the people. There’s always somebody walking around,” she said.

But she takes more than a wallet in her blue purse — she takes mace.

And mace may be a good thing. Minneapolis police say last Friday at 34th Street West and Harriet Avenue South, a woman getting out of her car was stopped by a man who held her up and took her phone.

Just a street over and minutes later, officers say a man held up a woman at 33rd Street and Holmes Avenue South as she walked her dog.

And one more street over, at 32nd Street and Bryant Avenue South, two women were robbed, a purse was stolen and one of the women was hit.

All the women got away, and so did the suspects. The robberies happened within 20 minutes of each other.

City police say what’s happening in the area is worth paying attention to. They have loose descriptions of the suspects and hope to find out who it is that’s taking the fun from a place people come to be entertained.

The Uptown Association says they are paying attention to what’s happened. They have specific beat officers watching the area day and night.

One big thing they’ve done recently, they say, is put cab stands up on a number of blocks. They’re hoping people will not walk home in the dark and instead grab a taxi.
