MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — The University of Minnesota is stepping up security on campus after a string of robberies and most recently an incident with a man having a gun on campus.
In a letter to students and faculty, President Eric Kaler said Tuesday the school will increase patrols on and near campus, add security cameras in high traffic and public areas and enhance building security.
President Kaler emphasized the U of M is a safe campus in a safe city, but more can be done to deter crime. There have been at least 15 robberies since September. Earlier this week, an adult man caused campus to go into a lockdown after he allegedly tried to take a laptop from a female student at gunpoint.
The suspect fled the scene through the campus tunnels before police could catch him. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Minneapolis Police or University of Minnesota police.
Kaler said the plan includes short-term measures and long-term goals to keep the U of M campus safe. And if students are out and see anything suspicious, they’re urged to call 911 immediately. Students are also encouraged to walk in groups for additional safety.
