MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Police said Tuesday an arrest has been made in the shooting last Thursday of a 2-month-old boy in north Minneapolis.

Authorities said a 17-year-old boy, an uncle of the victim, turned himself into police at about 1 a.m. Tuesday.

The teen has been arrested and is currently in custody at the Hennepin County Juvenile Detention Center pending criminal charges.

Police were called to the 2400 block of Emerson Avenue North at about 9 p.m. on Sept. 6 on a report of a shooting. When authorities arrived, an adult man was holding his 2-month-old boy, who had been hit in the neck by a stray bullet.

It was initially believed that a man was standing outside the house on a sidewalk holding the child when he heard a gunshot, then realized the baby had been shot.

Authorities later learned that the shooting took place inside a home and that the baby’s uncle was in possession of a handgun.

Police said the 17-year-old accidentally discharged his gun, hitting the boy, and fled the scene.

The case is still under investigation.
