MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Brooklyn Center police have identified the officer involved in a shooting that killed a 24-year-old man early Friday morning.

Officer Ryan Soliday, hired by the department in January 2010, shot and killed Edmond Fair after a traffic stop and ensuing struggle, according to police.

Immediately following the shooting, Soliday was placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard for this type of “critical” incident, police said.

Police say Soliday is described as an exemplary officer with five Chief’s Certificates of Commendations and a Merit of Achievement award – all since his hiring in 2010. He’s had no disciplinary actions taken against him during the same period of time.

Last week, the family of Fair claimed that he was handcuffed and Tasered before being shot.

Brooklyn Center police won’t comment on that accusation, but said the shooting was the result of a traffic stop on Shingle Creek Blvd shortly after 2 a.m. Friday.

The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the shooting and also said they can’t comment on an active investigation.
