MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The Minneapolis Police Department is asking for the public’s help to find a violin worth thousands of dollars that was taken during a theft from a vehicle on Monday.

On the day of the theft, the victim made stops on the 2700 block of Lyndale Avenue South and near the area of 38th Street and Pleasant Avenue South between 3 and 3:30 p.m. When the victim got home, she realized her violin was missing from her car. It was made in the late 1880s and is valued at about $5,000, police said.

Authorities said it’s a full-sized violin with a 3/4 inch chin rest and is rusty red-orange in color. It has some repaired cracks on the side and rather than having a black tail piece, common in most violins, its tail piece is the same color as the rest of the instrument.

Police said the interior of the violin has the word “Bretton” inscribed on it. The case also features a distinctive black bottom and a beat up wood top. The violin is encased in a zippered section lined with green flannel and the rest of the case is lined with green velvet. The case also contains extra tuning pegs that are the same color as the violin.

Anyone with information about the incident or who might know where the violin and case are is asked to call the Fifth Precinct of the Minneapolis Police Department at (612) 673-5590.
