MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The DNA of a man shot and killed by police has been found on the trigger of the gun they used to shoot him.

That’s according to sources with direct knowledge of the struggle that killed Terrance Franklin on May 10.

Police say he ran from officers, then fought with them in the basement of a home near 27th Street and Bryant Avenue S.

Sources say testing shows Franklin’s DNA on an officer’s submachine gun. They say Franklin took the gun, but officers were able to get it back and return fire.

On Thursday, the lawyer for Franklin’s family told WCCO-TV that he’s not at all surprised that Franklin’s DNA was on the gun.

He says the police officers were hit by friendly fire and that they planted the DNA evidence.

The case will be heard by a grand jury next month, which is standard when someone is killed by police.
