MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Edina Police are warning residents to lock their vehicles and remove valuables after a summer spike in thefts.

Between June 1 and July 28, there were 33 reported residential thefts from vehicles. Of the 33, 24 of the thefts involved unlocked or open vehicles. That’s a 55 percent spike from this time last year, according to police.

The loss of the valuables totals more than $23,000.

“Remember to remove all valuables from your vehicle — including the garage door opener — and lock your doors. Exterior garage lighting is a good idea, too,” Crime Prevention Specialist Molly Anderson said . “Don’t hesitate to call 9-1-1 if you see or hear anything suspicious.”

The thefts haven’t been isolated in one area, so police have increased overnight patrols throughout the city.
