WARROAD, Minn. (WCCO) – An animal shelter is pleading for help after rescuing 30 pets found living in rancid conditions in Warroad, Minn.
The Pennington County Humane Society got a call about a person hoarding 28 dogs and 2 cats in a house.
The city police chief was also contacted. The American Eskimo Dogs were in bad condition. The Humane Society reported their fur was matted and covered in feces.
Most of the dogs — whose ages range from 8 weeks to 13 years old — desperately needed medical attention and vaccinations.
The Humane Society said the animals had not been let outside of the home in more than 3 years. Many had to be shaved to remove their matted fur.
City attorney Steven Anderson says the dogs’ owners Gregory and Jan Kujava have been charged with animal cruelty, public nuisance and exceeding the number of dogs allowed by the city.
The Humane Society said some of the dogs are available for immediate adoption, whereas others will require more medical attention and time to adjust to their situation.
The shelter says it will cost them over $1,000 a week to care for the dogs, and hopes donations will help offset the costs.
