MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A Brooklyn Park man has pleaded guilty to criminal vehicular homicide in the hit-and-run crash that killed a 70-year-old woman in March.
Perry Bernard Atkins, 25, pleaded guilty last Friday.
The crash happened the afternoon of March 23 at the intersection of Fremont and 21st Avenues North in Minneapolis.
The woman, Mee Lor, was taken to North Memorial Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, and died a short time later. The driver of the vehicle she was in was her grandson. The entire right side of their Toyota Camry was caved in, police said.
After an initial investigation, police located the unoccupied suspected hit-and-run vehicle — a GMC Yukon — close to the accident scene. Police arrested Atkins, who was driving under a suspended license.
He has been sentenced to one year at the Hennepin County Workhouse and seven years of supervised probation. He was also ordered to pay $32,920 in restitution.
The terms of his probation also include undergoing anger management and psychological evaluation, writing a letter of apology to the victim’s family for each year of his probation on the anniversary of the incident, and maintaining no other contact with the family.
