MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — A Grand Rapids police officer is on administrative leave after shooting at a suspect vehicle during a high-speed chase, according to authorities.

The incident started around 5:35 p.m. on July 4, while officers were responding to a domestic assault. While en route, the deputy located the suspect in a vehicle and attempted to stop the driver.

The suspect fled the scene and led police on a high-speed chase, reaching speeds in excess of 100 mph.

During the pursuit, the suspect attempted to ram two marked squad cars head-on at speeds of more than 80 mph, forcing the squad cars off the road and into to the ditch.

A Grand Rapids police officer caught up with the vehicle at an intersection and attempted to stop the driver, firing several shots at the fleeing vehicle.

The chase finally ended on Highway 169, with the assistance of the Minnesota State Patrol.

The driver of the vehicle, a juvenile, was taken into custody. He’s currently being held until formal charges can be filed.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the shooting. The officer involved has been put on administrative leave while the investigation continues.

One Grand Rapids officer and one Itasca County deputy suffered minor injuries during the suspect’s arrest.
