MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The man killed by a SWAT team sniper during a standoff Wednesday night in northern Minnesota has been identified.

The Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office announced Friday that 34-year-old Miquell David Deppa, of Liberty Township, died due to blood loss from a gunshot wound.

Deppa suffered the gunshot wound during a multi-hour standoff at his home on the 9000 block of Spencer Road in Beltrami County. The sniper, identified as deputy Jeff Roberts, shot Deppa when he emerged from the home, pointing a rifle toward authorities.

After being injured, Deppa crawled back into his home only to emerge later from a window. Authorities immediately arrested him then and emergency crews flew him to a Fargo hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The standoff started when a call came from Deppa’s house saying he was under metal duress, talking about hurting himself and others, and was armed with a loaded rifle. When sheriff’s deputies, a SWAT team and other law enforcement agencies arrived on the scene, they helped two women escape the house.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) is currently investigating the shooting. Roberts has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard.
