MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A 31-year-old Wyoming, Minn., man faces multiple charges in connection to the hit-and-run crash that killed an Army veteran earlier this month.
Dereck Sanders is charged with three counts of criminal vehicular homicide. Authorities arrested him Wednesday morning at his parents’ home. When questioned by authorities, he said had about “half a dozen drinks” on June 17, the night of the crash.
“I had too many,” Sanders said, according to a criminal complaint. “I shouldn’t probably have been in my truck.”
Sanders is accused of killing 24-year-old Trevor Langlois, who is also from Wyoming.
Sanders allegedly struck Langlois as he was pulled over on a freeway entrance ramp to Interstate-35 in Hinckley. Langlois had just picked up a truck from a vendor on Craigslist and was having problems with the vehicle, according to a person who helped Langlois pick the truck up. The witness said they were stopped on the side of the road and that Langlois was talking to him by the driver’s side of his car when he was hit.
Emergency crews brought Langlois to a hospital in Duluth, where he died days later on June 22.
Debris from the crash site led authorities to believe a newer model Ford F150 pickup was involved in the crash. After sending a message to the public to lookout for a F150 with front end damage, a tip came in from Bloomington that led authorities to Sanders.
If convicted, Sanders could face a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison and/or a $60,000 fine.
