MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A Kanabec County Chief Deputy who was sentenced in connection with a recent driving under the influence case has resigned from his position, effective immediately, according to the county sheriff’s office.

Joel Bos, 34, received a stayed sentenced on Tuesday of 45 days in jail providing he remains law abiding and has no similar offenses. He will also serve two years probation, pay a $400 fine as well as other court fees. Bos pleaded guilty to fourth degree DUI.

According to court documents, authorities received reports of a car swerving and driving in the wrong lane on Highway 65 in the city of Braham at about 2 a.m. on Dec. 11, 2011.

A short time later, authorities in Isanti County spotted Bos passed out behind the wheel of his car. Deputies noted that his foot was on the brake and the car was still in drive.  A deputy attempted to wake Bos by shining his flashlight and yelling through the locked door, but Bos was unresponsive.

The deputy then started pounding on the roof of the car. Bos heard that noise, then stepped on the accelerator and drove away, according to court documents.

A chase ensued and less than a minute later, Bos hit a ditch before pulling over. He refused a standard field sobriety test given to all suspected drunk drivers, was handcuffed and taken to jail.
