MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A man pleaded guilty late last week to DWI and hit-and-run charges stemming from a March incident that left a 28-year-old cyclist dead on the city’s south side.

Juan Ricardo Hernandez-Campoceco, 27, pleaded guilty Friday to one felony hit-and-run charge and one misdemeanor DWI charge. He is slated to be sentenced on June 11.

On March 30, Hernandez-Campoceco struck Elyse Mary Stern near the intersection of East Lake Street and Cedar Avenue South. Stern had turned into oncoming traffic, collided with Hernandez-Campoceco’s car and was thrown some 70 feet. She died at the scene.

After the collision, Hernandez-Campoceco drove off. He later said his two passengers told him to flee the scene.

Police arrested Hernandez-Campoceco after seeing his car had a shattered windshield and severe front end damage.
