MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The Minneapolis Police Department has named the officer who was driving the SUV involved in a collision last week that killed a 24-year-old motorcyclist in Uptown.

Officer Joshua Young, police said Friday, was driving the squad SUV on May 10. The collision that day killed Ivan Romero and injured his girlfriend, Joselin Torrejon. Young was on his way to the scene of a shooting that left two officers injured and one burglary suspect, Terrance Franklin, dead.

The State Patrol is reconstructing the crash that killed Romero, police said. All interviews in relation to that crash – including one with Young – have been completed.

Young joined the Minneapolis Police Department in 2006. He has also served in the Minnesota National Guard in combat deployments to Somalia and Iraq. He has been awarded the Medal of Commendation and the Life Saving Award while working with Minneapolis Police. He was also one of two people named National Adult Learner of the Year in 2012.

Police also announced Friday that they plan to interview the two officers wounded in the May 10 shooting next week. Witnesses are still being interviewed in relation to that incident, and DNA from the scene is being analyzed by the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. Ballistics evidence is being examined by the MPD crime lab.
