ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) – A Maplewood teen waived his right to an adult certification hearing Friday morning in connection with the death of 16-year-old Anna Hurd.

Seventeen-year-old Anthony Joseph Mitchell will appear in adult court on June 25 to face a 2nd-degree intentional murder charge.

Anna Hurd, Mitchell’s girlfriend, was found stabbed to death on Feb. 23 at Maplewood’s Hillside Park. The initial call to police was placed by Mitchell’s mother, who said a girl was found beaten and unresponsive on a trail in the park.

Police say Mitchell went for a walk with Hurd in the park, but returned home alone at 2 a.m. and told his mother that Hurd had gone to a friend’s house. He later said he was going to go look for Hurd, but returned home distraught with blood on his hands.

Mitchell was seen that night playing with a knife at a party. Hurd was planning to move to Texas to live with her mother, and had apparently broke up with Mitchell.

Ramsey County Attorney John Choi says he is pleased with the guilty plea in Hurd’s murder case.

“This is a tragic end to a promising young life,” Choi said.

Mitchell’s bail has been set at $700,000.
