MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Minneapolis police are searching for those responsible for an apparent drive-by shooting Saturday afternoon on the city’s south side that left witnesses frightened and damaged a grocery store and two cars.

Sgt. William Palmer said no one was injured in incident, which happened around 2:20 p.m. near the intersection of 38th Street and Chicago Avenue.

Witnesses said bullets first flew into the Cup Foods grocery store, which sits on the corner of the intersection.

“I thought it was a fire cracker or a cap gun or something,” said Tony, who was in Cup Foods and didn’t want to give his name.

He added: “I looked around and when I seen everybody else hit the floor, I hit the floor.”

Tony reported hearing five or six gunshots and said children were in the store when bullets broke through the glass.

But that wasn’t the end of it.

One block away, near 37th Street and Elliot Avenue, another witness was sitting in her car, talking to a friend. She said they both heard the gunshots and then saw a car come around the corner, stop by their car and start shooting.

“We had to duck for our lives,” said the witness, who also didn’t want to give her name, citing fear.

The bullet shattered her driver’s side, back-seat car window. Glass and bullet fragments landed in her car seats where her children usually sit.

“My babies are with my parents right now, and I just thank God that they weren’t in the car,” the witness said.

Investigators searched the car and the area around the store for clues. They hope surveillance video from camera inside the store will help them find those responsible.

The witnesses didn’t want to show their faces on TV, citing concerns about gang retaliation.

They said several young men were standing in front of the store right when the shooting started. Many believe the shooting is gang related, but police would not confirm or deny their suspicions.
