MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A 27-year-old man has been charged in the hit-and-run crash that killed a bicyclist early last Saturday morning.
Police responded to the area of Lake Street East and Cedar Avenue South at about 2:15 a.m. last Saturday after reports that a bicyclist had been struck by a vehicle that left the scene.
The bicyclist, later identified as 28-year-old Elyse Stern, was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities said she was not wearing a helmet and her bike didn’t have a light.
After being given a description of the vehicle, authorities were able to track down a vehicle belonging to Juan Hernandez-Campoceco. Police said the vehicle had sustained front-end damage.
Police said Hernandez-Campoceco exhibited signs of intoxication. He was taken into custody.
He now faces a felony hit-and-run charge as well as a misdemeanor charge of fourth-degree driving while impaired.
Stern’s family said she was very adventurous, loved to travel, was a free spirit and loved to bike. They also said she would always ride her bike on main streets because she felt safer with more street lights.
