MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A man who got involved in a standoff with police last Friday that lasted more than nine hours is in jail and facing charges.

Jelani Abiola Jernigan, 25, has been charged with one count of first-degree assault, one count of second-degree assault and one count of prohibited person in possession of a firearm in connection with the incident. Police were called to the 3800 block of Aldrich Avenue North last Friday on a report of a man with a gun. Witnesses in the area said he was shooting at people in the area.

One witness who said he had gotten into an argument with Jernigan the night before said Jernigan saw him outside his house. Jernigan went inside to grab a gun, then shot twice at the victim, according to police.

By the time police got to the scene, Jernigan went back into his house and a standoff ensued. More than nine hours into negotiations, officers heard several gunshots being fired inside the house. Police fired tear gas and eventually used a Bobcat to create a large hole inside the residence. Jernigan then tried to flee, but was arrested.

Police say nobody was hurt in the incident. Jernigan remains in the Hennepin County Jail.
