MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Authorities say two people are dead and another is hospitalized following a shooting after an illegal late night party got out of hand on the north side of Minneapolis.

Officers were called to a commercial building on the 3800 block of Fremont Avenue North about 3 a.m. Friday on a report of shots fired. Police Sgt. Stephen McCarty says 50 to 100 people were gathered at an “after hours establishment” when the shooting occurred.

Police say they’ve been called to the late night club 15 times before, and that there was a shooting at that location just last month. The city said zoning inspectors deemed it illegal in November, and have since issued three more citations.

The club owners will likely face charges, as the city said they are looking into shutting the club down.

Two adult men died at the scene, one inside, and one outside the location. A third victim showed up to Hennepin County Medical Center about 20 minutes later with non-life threatening injuries.

One of the victim’s stepmother said it’s “not fair.”

“He told one of his cousins, ‘I got shot,’ and he died,” said Monique White, a victim’s stepmother. “My thing is whoever did this, you need to do the right thing and turn yourself in. He has a family … a grown man that’s just coming into his life and his life was taken. It’s not right.”

Witnesses at the scene said there was an argument before the shootings took place. Police said they have no suspects in custody, and anyone with information on what happened is asked to call Minneapolis Police at (612) 692-8477.

Police say the public is not at risk and the incident is still under investigation.

The victims’ names are not yet known.
