MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — It may be Minnesota’s most notorious murder case and it happened 50 years ago today.

It was on March 6, 1963, when Carol Thompson was brutally killed in her St Paul home in a murder-for-hire case.

Three men were convicted, including her husband, T. Eugene Thompson, an attorney, who spent more than two decades in prison.

Now in his mid-80s, Thompson lives in the Twin Cities and has some contact with his four grown children.

Author William Swanson has written a book about the case, “Dial M: The Murder of Carol Thompson”.

“All four of them, I think, would say that they believe their dad was guilty. I think they would all say their dad is not much a part of their lives. But he’s there,” said Swanson.

Thompson’s son Jeff became a lawyer like his father and even invited T. Eugene to his swearing in as a Winona County District Judge.

T. Eugene Thompson has always maintained his innocence in what’s been called Minnesota’s “murder of the century.”
