MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Maplewood Police arrested a 17-year-old boy Friday in connection with the death of Anna Hurd, a 16-year-old girl from North St. Paul who was stabbed to death last week.

The arrested teen, whose identity was not released, is currently being held at the Ramsey County Detention Center on a second-degree murder charge. The case is now being presented to the Ramsey County Attorney’s Office for consideration, police said. Charges are expected on either Monday or Tuesday.

Due to the ongoing nature of the investigation, details of the evidence – including the arrested teen’s name — are being withheld from the public. However, the teen’s name might be released if he is charged.

At a press conference Friday afternoon, Maplewood Police Chief David Kvam said that the arrest is just first step in a long process.

During the conference, authorities said the teen was an acquaintance of Hurd. They also said that the murder did not appear to be premeditated.

Patrick Hurd, the girl’s father, said Friday that there aren’t words to express how relieved he is to know that justice may soon be served.

Police found Hurd’s body on the afternoon of Feb. 23. Officers were called to the area of McKnight Road and Ripley Avenue — just blocks away from the home of Hurd’s father– on a report of a person needing medical attention.

The teen’s death was a result of several stabbing-type puncture wounds, the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office said.

Hurd played volleyball and basketball for North St. Paul High School. She was set to leave Minnesota soon; she planned on going to Texas to live with her mom.
