ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) – In order to avoid submitting to a urine test Wednesday, a man jumped from the second floor of the Dakota County Courthouse to the first, landing himself in the hospital, authorities say.

Jordan William Salmela, 22, made the leap after going before a judge on a theft charge, said Chief Deputy Tim Leslie, of the Dakota County Sheriff’s Office.

The Pioneer Press reported that Judge David Knutson ordered Salmela, who has handful of misdemeanor convictions, to submit to a urine test. Salmela then told authorities he was going to get a drink of water, because he didn’t have to go yet.

But shortly after that, he reportedly ran and jumped over the open staircase.

Salmela was brought to Regions Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Leslie said.

No charges have been filed yet, but the case will be sent to the county attorney on Thursday.

Salmela could be booked within a week.
