MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Extra security is now in place with students resuming class in Sleepy Eye and New Ulm Monday. The action was taken after a teenager was arrested for allegedly posting threats on Facebook.

Gary Amoroso of the Minnesota School Administrators Association says Facebook works both ways when it comes to school safety.

“A student can, in a moment of anger, post something and then it’s seen,” said Amoroso. “Because of the way the technology works, you can trace to where that posting came from even if there’s not a name associated with (it). And so I think that’s a positive for law enforcement and school authorities.”

Later Monday, U.S. Senator Al Franken will be discussing school safety with educators, child advocates and others at a middle school in Eagan.

Franken, a member of the Senate Education Committee, is pushing for more counselors and psychologists in schools.
