MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A former Minnesota Amateur Hockey Association treasurer has pleaded guilty to tax evasion, according to the United States Attorney’s Office.
In his plea agreement, Steven Brier admitted that from April 2005 through September 2011, he stole at least $384,000 from District 2 of the Minnesota Amateur Hockey Association. Brier, who worked as a volunteer unpaid treasurer for District 2 during that time, had access to bank accounts and was able to write numerous checks to himself without detection.
The Attorney’s Office says Brier tried repaying the money he had taken by gambling at casinos. He was able to pay back more than $81,000, but still owes $302,000.
For his offenses, Brier faces a potential maximum penalty of five years in federal prison, as well as possible fines and orders of forfeiture.
