MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — The prison-like program that houses Minnesota’s most dangerous sex offenders could be reformed.

On Monday, a task force recommended the program be replaced with regional treatment centers.

Right now, more than 600 of the worst offenders are committed to high-security facilities in St. Peter and Moose Lake. And they’re expensive to house — about $120,000 a year each.

Several of them are also suing the state.

They say the committment program is illegal because it’s basically life imprisonment.

Lawmakers plan to talk about the task force’s proposed changes later this month.
