ST. PAUL (WCCO) — The holiday season is off to a rough start for a Christmas tree stand in St. Paul.
The money made selling trees at the stand located at the Highland Park Golf Course goes to send kids to camp through “The Y.” On Saturday night, it was broken into, burglarized and vandalized. It’s the second incident since Thanksgiving weekend.
For nearly 30 years, Howard Kilby has volunteered to sell trees to raise money for The Y.
“Mainly, they did a lot of damage,” said Kilby. “They broke windows and trashed the trailer.”
Kilby found the damage and called police both times. The thieves got away with some wreaths and a small amount of money, according to St. Paul Police.
Kilby says the only money taken was enough for the volunteers selling trees to make change for customers.
The vandals broke windows and busted the door to the trailer, which will have to be replaced, Kilby said.
As far as another break in, Kilby says they’ll hope it doesn’t happen again.
“We really can’t do anything more than what we’re doing,” said Kilby.
St. Paul Police say they’ll be patrolling that area in Highland Park near the golf course. Anyone with information that could help the case is asked to call St. Paul Police.
