MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – One man is in the hospital with gunshot wounds after being shot by an officer in Minneapolis overnight.

Police responded to a call of shots fired in the area of 37th Street and Elliot Avenue South at about 11 p.m. Wednesday. When officers got there, they followed a car that was leaving the area.

When the car stopped a few blocks away, police say a man ran out then started shooting at officers.

Police fired back and hit him. A handgun was recovered at the scene.

The suspect was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center and is expected to survive. He was identified as 22-year-old David Tsehai Embaye, of Minneapolis. His condition has not been updated.

No police officers were hurt, but all four who were involved are on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure for officer-involved shootings.

The officers were identified as Officer Walter Alvarado, Officer Omar Foulkes and Officer Brandon Kitzerow.

Alvarado joined the department in 2007. Foulkes began in June of 2006 and Kitzerow began with the department in 2001.

Anyone who saw this shooting and has not spoken to investigators is asked to call Minneapolis Police at 612-673-2941.
