MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — New details released regarding an Anoka man who was shot seven times reveal the victim was sleeping at the time of the attack.
According to a criminal complaint, 27-year-old Darrel Donte Reed, currently in critical condition, was shot multiple times in the face, arms and torso on Saturday in a back bedroom on the 700 block of Southview Drive in Anoka.
The suspect, 24-year-old Adrian Dominique Bell, of East Bethel, was charged Tuesday with first-degree attempted murder and first-degree assault in the shooting.
According to the complaint, officers were dispatched to the area on a report of a shooting around 3:14 p.m. Saturday. Upon arrival, they found Reed in a back bedroom with multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Hennepin County Medical Center where he underwent emergency surgery.
The homeowner and girlfriend of Reed told police she was taking a nap in a back bedroom with Reed when Bell came into the room. She said Bell pulled out a gold handgun and began shooting at Reed. She said she was able to run out of the room without being injured.
Two other adults in the residence told police they were in the living room watching TV with Bell when he suddenly stood up and walked towards the back bedroom. They said they heard the gunshots and watched Bell walk out of the apartment carrying a handgun.
Police located Bell in Minneapolis during a traffic stop. At that time, they were approached by a woman who said Bell was just at her home and had asked to leave something at the residence. Police searched the home and found a black and gold Highpoint 9mm handgun in the attic.
Bell was taken into custody and was transported to the Anoka County Jail. According to the charges, Bell admitted going to the residence with the intent of killing Reed. He told police when he arrived, Reed was in the living room and there was a baby present.
He told officers he waited until Reed went back to the bedroom. Bell admitted to shooting Reed seven times saying, “I went back there to kill him.”
